Orion

October 2010

I have had numerous posts from HHL members asking that I try some heavier bow weights and decided to do so. I ordered some .050 glass from Kenny and decided to try .050 on the back with .040 on the belly and a moderately heavy wood layup. Orion was the result. I decided to use the overpass riser again and kept my options open, not deciding until after the bow was out of the oven whether to go with a standard or forward riser. I ended up opting for the forward riser.

Layup:

.050 clear glass
.090 red elm parallel
.090 lamboo tapered .0015
.090 lamboo tapered .0015
.090 red elm parallel
.040 clear glass

Total glass: .090
Total wood: .360

Riser: 18” laminated bacote

Bacote limb tips

68” 57@28

This bow came out really nicely. Very smooth for the heavy weight.

I laminated two different pieces of bacote for the riser. The shelf side is spectacular...

The off side is less so, but still nice

This was my first ever use of tip overlays, and they came out very nicely.

Tillering, slightly positive

Being that I can't draw a bow this heavy, my friend Jesse did the honors for this full draw pic.

No complaints on how Orion shoots... and it buries those arrows in the target real well!
