Meet the Big Bad Wolves

In late September 2009, I suddenly got the chance to go on a hog hunt in West Texas. This hunting adventure is documented on its own at:

The Old Phart, the Big Bad Wolf and The Three Little Pigs

Right now, I'm still a week and a half from actually taking the trip, so the page is about how it all came about and the preparations. It will be completed when I come back... hopefully reporting success.

One of the problems I faced, aside from never having bowhunted before, was the light draw of my bows. I favor and promote light draws from an age and health standpoint, but I'm not foolish and I knew 28# was not a good weight for this job. Solution: If you're an old phartt and you're going pig hunting, you need help. You need a Big Bad Wolf. I decided to quickly build a bow that would be somewhat heavier than the heaviest I regularly shoot, which was 32#. I decided to try for a 38# bow.

I ran into some problems with the build and ended up with a short, handy, but for me heavy 42# Big Bad Wolf. I wasn't sure I could handle it, though for hunting, with only the occasional shot, it seemed possible. However, for insurance, I built a second Big Bad Wolf... really, really fast! It came out at 35#. (These weights are at my 25" draw.)

It was a fun, very intense week, with 9 hour days in the shop. (In between bow work, I also built a 3D foam pig to practice on).

In spite of the problems I had, and the intensity of getting them both done quickly, they are very nice bows, and very pretty. They both shoot well, and Wolfie 1 especially really spits out an arrow.
