Glue Room
One of the problems I've had in regard to using my forms, clamps and oven is the physical strength required to move the completed layup into the oven. Another is the issue of the floor space taken up by the oven. My dream for quite awhile was to have a separate place to do layups and an easier way to handle the forms. I recently set everything else aside and made this dream come true. Not quite finished yet, but close...
I had a model railroad in my furnace room, which is also my bow room and holds my arrow work bench. I moved the railroad out and created workspace for laying up bows plus storage for clamps, glue, finishes, etc. At the same time, I modified my top opening oven into a front opening oven and mounted it at right angle at bench height.
Here is the result...
Here is my bow oven as it was, on the floor along one wall of my working shop. Form storage was on outriggers that also served to stabilize the oven. My shop is quite small and holds a lot of large tools, all of which are on wheels and end up parked along the walls. Several machines lived parked in front of the oven, which placed them out into the floor area.

Here the oven is gone and the tools can now be moved up closer to the wall, tucked under the fastenings and wood shelves, freeing floor space. |
It is amazing to me how the addition of 24" of floor space opened up my shop! The door at the rear, though which you can see my indoor target, leads to the furnace room, where the railroad and bow room were.

This is from the furnace room door. Top the right I have installed steel shelving and almost 14 feet of solid 3/4" plywood work surface, plus two storage cabinets. The oven, now modified to be front opening, bridges the gap between this work bench and the arrow bench. My forms are stored on top of the oven. |
Here is the oven, opened.

This is to the left of the oven... the arrow bench and bow wall. a heavy commercial sewing machine, able to handle leather, is to the left of the picture. |
Here is the arrow bench. Arrow storage is above.

After I had the basic arrangement complete, I built in clamp storage. Layup is done on the bench, then the form is slid over and into the oven. That's still a heavy job at this point, but I'm planning a swivel wheeled cradle and small corner bridge that will let me just roll the completed layup into the oven. (I should note that this emphasis on handling the weight is do to some physical limitations I have.)

I'm quite pleased with the new space utilization. I've pulled two bows off since the change and it seems it will work out well.
