As I See It

Contemplations on Archery

I am a rather philosophical person and like to ponder things. Sometimes those things are archery related. I reach conclusions on issues, and those conclusions are purely my own, but I do like to post them for others to think about. They can agree or disagree, but the thinking, I believe, strengthens our understanding of archery as a whole, where it's been and where it's going. If you're feeling up for some reflection, check out the things that appear here from time to time.

Tradition As I See It - Probably one of the most recurrent discussions (for which read "heated arguments") that comes up on the trad archery lists is the "What is traditional" argument. I gave this a lot of thought and came up with the following essay. It will probably satisfy very few, as positioins on this issue are relatively fixed, but it helped me sort out some of my own feelings and attitudes, since I recently made a giant mental and emotional leat from Howarad Hill longbows to modern high tech trad. If it gives you a few things to think about, I think that would be grand.

Reflections of a Bowaholic - I had a nasty lawn to mow and came up with some thoughts on how we regard bows... which somehow prompted the universe to bless me with yet another that I wasn't even looking for. Some fun thoughts, some good thoughts and some pic's and description of a unique antique longbow.

Thoughts on Shooting Styles - The subject of shooting styles gets a lot of attention, some of it pretty heated. It came up on the Longbowmen list and this was my own take on it all, for what it's worth...

Smoking in Camp - This was a simple question thread on Stickbow, "How many folks smoke a pipe in camp?". It became a firestorm over the whole issue of smoking.

Shooting Improvement - Aiming System vs. Form - The discussion of which system of aiming in traditional archery is endless, and I constantly see discussions of aiming systems as a means of improving accuracy. Very often, the problem isn't really the method of aiming as much as it is issues of form.
